Just wanted to let everyone know the outcome of this. The Harding Theater at 616 Divisidero has been saved. It's a matter of formality now, but the developer involved approached the lawyer appealing the demolition permit with a plan that involves not tearing the theater down, so the appeal in front of the board of supes was continued until next month to let all parties involved review the plan. I hope to have some pictures of the inside to post here this week -- I am one of a few people that will be doing a walkthrough of the theater tommorrow!
Thanks and kudos to everyone involved in this! A piece of SF history has been saved!

Some basic info on Reiki:

Usui Reiki is a system of natural healing that originated in Japan during the early 1900’s and has since become popular worldwide. Many hospitals and health centers have found Reiki to be so beneficial for patients (and staff), that they have incorporated Reiki into their health care services. Reiki utilizes spiritually guided life-force energy to facilitate holistic health and well-being. Reiki reduces tension and stress, dissolves unhealthy blockages, and nourishes the entire energy system, thus facilitating the body’s return to its natural state of health. Reiki works on all levels: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

In addition to assisting in the healing of physical, mental, emotional imbalances, Reiki is an excellent method for the transformation of consciousness. Reiki strengthens a person's connection to their own inner awareness and supports the flow of that awareness within and into all areas of life, cultivating a more harmonious, balanced, and positive way of being.

The beneficial effects of Reiki include:

*Stimulates and supports the body’s natural healing processes

*Alleviates stress and induces a state of deep relaxation

*Helps in relieving physical and mental/emotional pain

*Clears energy blockages and suppressed emotions

*Facilitates mental/emotional balance

*Works synergistically with traditional and alternative medicine practices

*Helps to speed recovery after surgery

*Helps to relieve the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation

*Eases depression, anxiety, insomnia, grief, anger, fear, guilt, and addiction

*Enhances clarity, awareness, confidence, harmony, and well-being

*Supports spiritual growth, transformational work, and the development of positive states of being

Reiki is always beneficial and can be used on its own, or in combination with other kinds of health care, acting to reduce negative side effects, shorten healing time, reduce or eliminate pain, reduce stress, and help create optimism.

Each Reiki experience is unique and varies somewhat from person to person. However, most people experience feelings of deep relaxation, peace, and well-being. Many feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and surrounds them. At the end of the session, one usually feels refreshed and revitalized, with a more positive, balanced outlook. Reiki sessions are administered to fully clothed clients on a massage table. Soft music and candlelight/natural light are used to create a relaxing and uplifting sacred space for healing to unfold gently and naturally.

Absolutely anyone can easily be attuned and trained to use Reiki. Reiki works through consciousness and intention, which are qualities that ALL humans possess, regardless of age, intelligence, philosophy, religion, lifestyle, personal history, health, etc. You do not have to follow a particular philosophy or dogma, or even be particularly skilled at healing to use Reiki. Reiki respects the free will and sovereignty of all individuals, so it can never be used to cause harm, either accidentally or purposefully. Reiki is even conducive to the health and well being of plants and animals.

I'm looking to try and solve this problem, or at least help us residents out a little, looking for other people interested in trying to make a change. For example more bike lanes in and around Alamoe Square, residential permit parking from 8am-8pm so people that work can get a chance to park before the dinner crowd rushes in, if anybody is interested in starting a discussion email me and let get it going. Everyone i talk to wants to make changes, all we need is a concrete plan, thanks for your time.
Hayes Valley/Lower Haight/Alamo Square residents:
meet up to join WORLD CAN'T WAIT Nov. 2 event at the Hayes Valley Green We'll discuss plans to develop a neighborhood emergency response team to deal with protecting our neighborhood in the event of an emergency...exactly what we have here:
WALK OUT OF WORK/SCHOOL and BOYCOTT COMMERCE ON NOV. 2 http://www.worldcantwait.org/

This is a national day of action, with a march planned at noon from Civic Center.

I went to the organizing meeting in September and agreed to gather with folks in Hayes Valley to do something in our hood. This is a call to my neighbors to meet at the new Hayes Valley Green (Hayes and Octavia) at 10 AM to talk about neighborhood organizing. Then at noon we can head over to Civic Center together.

We can prepare for emergencies together, including how to handle this political emergency through:
* building community-based alternatives to the "tapeworm economy" (see http://www.solari.com)
* being prepared in case an earthquake or other natural disaster hits us since we know now we can't count on the government to help us. Creating community-based solutions that leave us self-sufficient is political.
* your other ideas of effective strategies that you are READY TO TAKE ACTION on with your neighbors

come join us or create your own approach. visit http://www.worldcantwait.org/ for downloadable materials to help spread the word.
Landmark Firestation 21 will be holding a rare open house. Please come out and
see this neighborhood treasure. Here is the open house information:

Date: Saturday and Sunday May 21 and 22
Time: 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday; 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday
Location: 1152 Oak Street (at Broderick)

This Firehouse has never been open to the public before and will be open for two
days only. There will be a photo exhibit regarding the history of the building,
called 'Discovering Old 21'. It is being put together by students from the Urban
School and SFSU, and it is made possible by a grant from the History Channel..
Most neighbors have never seen the inside of the building, which is currently
being used by the Falletti developers. The exhibit will show the history of the
building and the surrounding area.

If there is anyone that is interested in helping out with the event, please
contact Richard Kay at r-k@prodigy.net or at 863-7720. The Firehouse
preseravation group really needs assistance in preparing for the exhibit on
Thurs., May 19 & Friday, May 20, as well as assistance during the event.
Volunteers can contact Richard Kay and let him know what time works best.

S.F.’s Historic Harding Theatre To Be Demolished Unless S.F. Board of Supervisors Intervenes at Feb. 15th Mtg.

The Harding Theatre, the last remaining theatre on Divisadero Street and one of the City’s best preserved neighborhood theatres is threatened with demolition. The Harding was operated as a church for many years but was sold to a developer who now plans to demolish the theatre. The Harding opened in 1926 and was designed by the Reid Brothers – a prominent San Francisco architectural firm that also designed the Fairmont Hotel. The Harding has served the community as a neighborhood movie theater, a live theater, a music venue and most recently as a church.

Unfortunately, during the Harding’s years as a church the exterior of the theater fell into disrepair and as a result most people have no idea that a beautiful theatre remains intact inside (see attached photos). Even the San Francisco Planning Department was hoodwinked into believing that nothing significant was left of the Harding Theatre. The department didn’t even bother to consider the historic merit of the building before consenting to its demolition.

Realizing that a beautiful landmark was about to be lost forever, neighbors filed an appeal of the Planning Department’s decision and now the San Francisco Board of Supervisor’s can save the Harding at the February 1st meeting. I urge you to write to the Board to express your support for saving the Harding.

Please send your emails to the distributions listed below. Whenever you send an email please “BCC” a copy to savedivistheater@gmail.com so that your support can be noted. Be sure to list your name and street address so that Supervisors know that your support is real.

Key Points:

The Harding Theatre is a one the best preserved neighborhood theatres remaining in San Francisco and preservation alternatives must be considered before we lose it forever.

The Planning Department did not properly consider the historic elements of the Harding Theater in its review of the developer’s plans for the Harding and as a result the Environmental review of the project was inadequate.

The architect and developer of the project proposed for the Harding site misled the public by suggesting that the Harding’s interior had been “mostly stripped” of its original architectural detail when in fact the theatre’s interior is remarkably intact.

The Harding is the last remaining theatre on Divisadero Street and is one of only a couple of theatres left in the Haight, Alamo Square and Western Addition neighborhoods where over a half dozen theatres once existed.

A restored Harding Theatre could be a key component of the growth and strengthening of the Divisadero Street neighborhood commercial corridor.

A compromise is possible that could provide for the preservation of the Harding Theatre and the addition of new housing on the Harding Theatre site. All reasonable alternatives to demolition must be explored.

The Harding Theatre is a beautiful neighborhood landmark that could never be replaced.

The interior of the Harding Theater is beautiful and remarkably intact. It deserves to be preserved.

THANK YOU !!!!!!

I have been watching this place...they got the alcohol permit but are now going for an entertainment permit. They'll probably be opening within a couple months!

Here is an article from the San Francisco Observer:

Art Lounge Hopeful Gathers Signatures, Waits

BY AARON SALTER

FILLMORE - Local residents may have noticed a new fixture on the corner of Fell and Divisadero. Every Saturday afternoon, Leila Fakouri sits behind a small table, gathering signatures in support of a liquor license for her new business venture, the Madrone Lounge. She is forced to take this approach, she says, because the prospect of a new establishment at 500 Divisadero has elicited both positive and negative reactions in the neighborhood.

"This isn't going to be a beer-sloshed frat-fest' I am trying to create a new category of entertainment-the art lounge," she said. "I want to give local artists more possibilities to reach people and make connections."

Fakouri is a graduate of the Art Institute with a degree in interdisciplinary arts. She has taught art and photography for non-profits, and was a studio manager for the Oberlein Dance Collective. She has tended bar and worked as a cocktail server.

As envisioned, the lounge will exhibit paintings, photographs, and sculptures from local artists. It will screen films and host live music. Before that can happen, however, however, she must obtain approval for the liquor license she has already bought but is attempting to transfer to the new location.

The community's reactions have mostly, but not uniformly, positive. On the plus side, the North of Panhandle Neighborhood Association and the Central City Progressives have come out in favor of the lounge. Even residents in the other neighborhood groups have also expressed support. "It is time to embrace small businesses that seek to bring more art and culture to Divisadero, even if they serve liquor as a means for economic survival," said Dean Preston, a resident and member of the Alamo Square Neighborhood Association (ASNA). But while Preston personally favors the lounge, the ASNA will not support the new venture because earlier this year they instituted a policy of no new liquor licenses in the area.

"We don't feel it is appropriate, ASNA President Sue Valentine said. There is already one bar on the block, we don't want a bar on a corner that already has a liquor store and two gas stations."

And these are not necessarily the factors the state Alcohol and Beverage Control (ABC) commission takes into consideration when it reviews a license application. According to ABC Supervisor and Investigator Donna Campbell, neighborhood support is a consideration, but crime levels also matter, as do the number of other liquor licenses in the area. In the particular census track where the lounge will be located, for example, 12 licenses are allowed and seven currently exist. And while the city-wide average crime rate is 214, the Park District stands at 268. "It's over but it is pretty close, it is usually 1000 or something," Campbell said.

But the ABC won't even consider the license until Fakouri gets approval from the planning board, which is currently underway. Until then, she can do little beyond staking out her corner each weekend, mustering as much community support as she can for the new venture. "The (focus) of the lounge isn't on alcohol, it is about art, experience and conversation," she said.

Dear friends and neighbors of Club Waziema,

Thanks to your overwhelming support at the most recent round of city hall meetings club waziema is happy to announce a party on wednesday, august 25th to celebrate the arrival of its liquor license. Because friends and ordinary people in the neighborhood banded together with the various neighborhood associations & a few friendly supervisors Club Waziema amazed the entertainment commision with a packed house and a line of people who wanted to voice their support for the club at the podium.

Please mark the date on your calendar & come celebrate with us. There will be a free buffet of the ever-popular veggie combo, beer, wine, and a few dj's to liven up the party room in the back.

Once again, this would not have happened without your support! Thank you to everyone who wrote emails or letters of support to the entertainment committee, to everyone who went out of their way to attend a hearing at city hall, and to all who gave encouragement along the way.

There's a whole lot to celebrate. We'll see you on the 25th!

This will be my second B2B while living in da hood. The first time I missed it completely from being totally hung-over. I vowed I would thoroughly enjoy it this time! We're planning a picnic for watching folks run by. Any suggestions on how early we should get to the park to secure a spot for our picnic? Also, we unfortunately live on the wrong side of Hayes and I'm wondering how thick the crowd is and for how long. If I gotta go pee, how long will I have to wait before being able to cross? One last question, cops are ok with alcohol in the park, right?

So, I'm heading to the Toronado yesterday, thinking "It's a lazy Sunday afternoon, I can grab a table, kick back, and goof". Unfortunately, once I got there, the place was an utter madhouse because of the Barley Wine fest, and, because none of the Lower Haight bars were suitablle for what I was doing (we needed table space) we ended up heading back to Alamo Square looking for a suitable watering hole and ended up at Fly Bar.

Now, I have to admit, it made me feel a little sheepish realizing that I don't really know the bars in my own neighborhood. I've been to Fly Bar a couple of times, Chances on occasion, Tsunami once, and Fulton Street before it closed down, but I don't really know the bars that are actually crawling distance from my place. (for example, I just realized there's this bar "Duili", or something like that, on Divis just up from Fly Bar, that I've never been to, and I've never been to that Ethiopian/Bar further down Divis).

So, I was wondering, do people have favorites, recommendations, etc.?

Enquiring minds want to know.
