Just wanted to let everyone know the outcome of this. The Harding Theater at 616 Divisidero has been saved. It's a matter of formality now, but the developer involved approached the lawyer appealing the demolition permit with a plan that involves not tearing the theater down, so the appeal in front of the board of supes was continued until next month to let all parties involved review the plan. I hope to have some pictures of the inside to post here this week -- I am one of a few people that will be doing a walkthrough of the theater tommorrow!

Thanks and kudos to everyone involved in this! A piece of SF history has been saved!

As of now the theater will be bought by a group of neihborhood loyals. The buisiness owners of Abir, Madrone, Little Star as well as others have been key in the negotiating. The plan is that the developer will be keeping the back stage area as well as the vacant lot for building housing. The entire front of the theatre will be kept as is, with renovations, for a theatre/restaurant/bar/movie house. It is an amazing thing for the hood and I wish all people envolved the best of luck.

Little Star? I don't even know what that place is.

Anyway, I'm so glad the theater is saved!

          Check 'em out... great pizza.

          ~anyway~

Yes- very, very stoked that the neighborhood's gaining a cultural/social space and not condominiums.

No no no- Stelladoro is a different place. Little Star is on the same block, same side of the street, but further up (right next to the Muslim Community Center). You owe it to yourself to go try some *immediately*. You won't regret it unless you're pizza-illiterate.

It's pretty new... there used to be a really BAD restaurant there. I went there once and had a salad - and - I'm not joking - they managed to burn the salad. Yes, burn the salad.

I'm glad to see Little Star take that space. They've done an amazing job renovating the spot. About a week after they opened, I saw that a whole crew of vespa people went there together - I counted 15 vespas out front. That's as good as an offical seal of coolness, as far as I'm concerned.

No joke about the old tenants of that space- I ordered a Mocha once and they gave me coffee w/ a pack of hot cocoa mix poured in it!

Yeah, besides the Vespas I saw a sidewalk bebop saxophone jam in front of Little Star. Bohemian pizzerias... oh yeah. Gotta love SF!

                What tha?

OK, I walked that block just yesterday and forgot to look...I can't believe I've never noticed Little Star.

I'm glad you weren't talking about Stelladoro because that place SUCKS!

Yeah- Stelladoro changed ownership in the last couple years and are definitely, um, not great. (I'm trying to be nice here...)

Little Star, on the other hand, is a neighborhood gem.

Watch the guys at Stelladoro... ever wonder why they keep playing blackjack on the cutting boards among other things?
                    My shady sense is tingling.

Is this plan still moving forward? I saw a blurb in the Chronicle today saying the Board of Supervisors postponed approval, but not many details were given. Hope it's just a speed bump--the plan sounds pretty sweet.
